Core values

What we believe

Core values for practice

These guide all of our creative work with children and families.

  1. We believe that the body is the first home and music is the first language

  2. That all children are innately musical from birth

  3. That all children are competent and capable, and able to make informed decisions, which should be respected

  4. Child-centred musical play and full-bodied movement play are essential for children’s healthy development

  5. Children need space, time, and attuned adult attention, to explore their musicality and fully benefit from music and movement play

  6. All children deserve the same opportunities for supported music and movement play

  7. Playfulness is at the heart of all we do here

If we are playful we laugh readily, are more open, welcome change and enjoy not knowing.

If we are playful, we enthusiastically explore and are less fearful. We smile more, keep things in perspective, worry less, and try new things.

If we are playful, we welcome difference, notice more, and are more attuned to others.

Playfulness enables us to facilitate creative play with lightness and ease.

Core values for partnership working

These are at the heart of all of our interactions with adults when sharing and advocating for children’s rights to play, sing, make music, dance, and play instruments.

  1. We value parents as children’s first educators

  2. We value the skills and expertise of the other professionals we work with

  3. We enjoy explaining what we do, and why we do it

  4. We are committed to creating spaces where people want to share their learning and support each other’s development

  5. We believe that children’s needs are best met when adults share their learning, and respect each other’s skills and expertise

  6. We work best with those who share and respect our core values

Inside Cocoon: blue and green voile curtains hang from the ceiling over pastel floor tiles, with a cut-out yellow splash shape standing on the wooden floor.

Come and play

Cocoon is a music and movement playspace designed for one family at a time. Two-year-olds rule here, and the whole play experience is centred on them.
